US officials have given TeleCuba Communications permission to land the first optical link between that market and Cuba. The operator plans to launch an 8Tbps submarine cable by the middle of 2011, having drummed up US$18 million from private investors. Cuba currently relies on expensive satellite connectivity for international access. It remains the only country in the Western Hemisphere without an international fiber link, although a proposed 1,550km Venezuelan project is expected to come online sometime next year.
