Nothing to Celebrate/Ni Bombos Ni Platillos

The Central Bank of Venezuela has announced with a tremendous fanfare that the economy recovered in the first quarter of 2011, posting growth of 4.5% compared to the contraction of -4.8% for the same quarter in 2010. The Central Bank also reported that the non-oil sector grew by 5.2%, whereas the oil sector posted a drop of -1.5%. Having analyzed the figures, we have no choice but to rain on the Central Bank’s parade and warn that the figures contain a high proportion of fantasies and very few truths ( more...)/ El Banco Central de Venezuela (BCV) anunció con bombos y platillos que la economía había repuntado en el primer trimestre de 2011, al registrar un crecimiento de 4,5%, en comparación con la caída de -4,8% en igual trimestre de 2010. El ente emisor informó también que el sector no petrolero creció 5,2%, mientras que el petrolero tuvo una caída de 1,5%. Al analizar los números no queda más remedio que aguarle la fiesta al BCV, y advertir que sus cifras tienen un alto coeficiente de irrealidades, con muy pocas verdades ( más...)
