US-Venezuela Tensions Increasing/ Tensiones Venezuela-EE.UU aumentan


Four key events in the first month of 2012 signal increased tensions between the United States and Venezuela. These are: 1. The expulsion of the Venezuelan Consul in Miami, Livia Acosta, for suspicion of cyber terrorism; 2. Iranian strongman Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s visit to Caracas and closer ties with Hugo Chavez’s Latin American allies; 3. The promotion of a U.S. Treasury Department-designated drug kingpin — Henry Rangel Silva — to Defense Minister; 4. A Paris-based international arbitration board’s (International Chamber of Commerce) decision favoring Exxon Mobil’s lawsuit against the government of Venezuela, and the subsequent withdrawal of the Venezuelan government from the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID), a World Bank entity. La expulsión de la Cónsul de Venezuela en Miami, Livia Acosta, por sospecha de terrorismo cibernético, 2. Visita del iraní, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, al hombre fuerte de Caracas y a estrechar los lazos con sus aliados en América Latina Hugo Chávez, 3. La promoción de un señalado capo de la droga por el Departamento del Tesoro de EE.UU.- Henry Rangel Silva - a ministro de Defensa, 4. La decisión a favorable a Exxon Mobil y contra el gobierno de Venezuela de una demanda en un consejo internacional de arbitraje con sede en París (Cámara de Comercio Internacional), y la posterior retirada del gobierno de Venezuela del Centro Internacional de Arreglo de Diferencias Relativas a Inversiones (CIADI), entidad del Banco Mundial.
