The government conditionally offered Tuesday to permit a meeting between President Hugo Chavez and the leader of Colombia's main rebel army to advance talks on swapping imprisoned guerrillas for dozens of hostages, including three U.S. contractors. In a statement, President Alvaro Uribe's office said an encounter would be allowed in a traditional southern stronghold of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, if the rebels "unilaterally set free a group of hostages and commit to free the rest."
