De acuerdo con los resultados oficiales del reciente referendo, Chávez perdió una parte importante del apoyo popular en el área metropolitana de Caracas, considerada un bastión histórico del chavismo y de la izquierda radical en Venezuela. La derrota se replicó a lo largo de las 13 ciudades más importantes del país, donde reside una población marginal considerable que favorece al chavismo.
